I am seeking help with a very rare coin/medal I found back in 1986 while metal detecting a Civil War camp occupied by Confederate troops on my property. For many years I was unable to identify the coin and thought it was just another foreign coin from the Colonial period. It was not until about 2 years ago I finally found the coin in Breen's Encyclopedia (Breen 1080) and Russel Ralau's book. It was then I realized I had found something very rare. There are only two others known and both of those are in the ANS collection. This piece would make only the third known specimen. It turns out this piece was struck in Florida in 1789. It is know as a "Proclamation 4 Reales of Charles IV" and was issued under the authority of Florida Oriental (East Florida) at its capital, St. Augustine. That would make this an Early American struck coin. I am looking for someone who is very knowledgeable in such things that may be able to help me realize the potential of something this rare.
